Global Navigation

Start/Stop: Bottom-left button. Press to play. Press again to stop.

Channel Editor: First menu button

Scale Editor: Second menu button

Pattern Editor: Third button (press to cycle views)

Song Editor: Fourth menu button

Channel Editor Controls

Select Channel: Top row (hold/shift-press to mute)

Assign Pattern: Second row buttons. Multiple patterns can be assigned to one or more channels.

Scale slots: Displays currently active scale slot.

Set Length: Hold start step, press end step

Set Global Octave: Applies to entire pattern. Press middle fader button to switch off.

Merge Modes: 1: trig, 2: note, 3: velocity. Hold shift for length merge modes using button 3.

Merge Modes

Trig: All/Skip/Only

Note: Avg/High/Low/Pattern

Velocity: Avg/High/Low/Pattern

Length: Avg/Long/Short/Pattern

Locks

Trig Locks: Hold step, modify desired trig param

Mask Lock: Hold step, modify desired mask

Octave Lock: Hold step, press desired octave

Channel Scale Lock: Hold step, press desired scale slot. Scale is applied to this channel only on selected step.

Pattern Editor

Pattern Select: Top row buttons (1-16)

Algorithm Select: Drums, Tresillo, Euclidean, NE

Bank Select: Choose pattern bank/variation

Pattern Select: Fine/coarse control for algorithm

Pattern Param: Secondary algorithm parameter

Prime/Paint: Preview then commit changes

Cancel: Discard primed changes

Move: Shift pattern left/right, reset position

Scale Editor

Scale Select: Quick press to apply global scale, hold to edit without applying scale

Scale Lock: Hold step + press scale button

Transpose: Global or per-step using locks

Locks

Scale Lock: Hold step, press desired scale slot. Lock applies globally on this step.

Transposition Lock: Hold step, select desired transposition using the transposition fader. Applies transposition on top of current scale values.

Scale precedence

Scale locks applied per channel in the channel editor > Scale locks applied globally in the scale editor > Global scale selection

Song Editor

Slots: Press to select, hold source + press target to copy

Length: Adjust sequence length (1-64 steps)

Essential Shortcuts

Norns Controls:
- E1: Navigate pages
- E2: Select parameters
- E3: Adjust values (hold K3 for fine control)
- K2 + step: Clear locks of type based on currently selected page on step
- K3 + K2: Clear all locks of type based on currently selected page on channel
Trig Locks:
- Hold step + turn E3: Create parameter lock
- Hold step + press scale: Create scale lock
- Hold step + press transpose: Create transpose lock
- Hold step + press octave: Create octave lock
Masks:
- Hold K3 + press step: Add/remove trig mask
- Hold step on mask page: Set note/velocity/length

Quick Operations

Add/Remove Trig: Hold K3 + press step
Clear Lock: Hold step + K2
Clear All: Hold K3 + K2
Global Set: Press without holding step
Change param on trig lock page: select param and press K2 to view param list.
Save action: K3
Cancel action: K2

Mask Types

Trig: Enable/disable steps

Note: Override pattern notes

Velocity: Set specific velocities

Length: Control note duration

Chord: Add a chord note to trig relative to current scale

Chord Operations

Add Chord: Hold step + select up to 4 notes
Strum Control: Use with Chord Strum param
Velocity: Use Chord Velocity modifier param
Shape: Use Chord Shape modifier param
Spread: Use spread param to space chord notes
Acceleration: Use acceleration param with spread param to create irregular spacing between chords
Arpeggio: Use chord arpeggio param to create arpeggios across the length of the current trig

MIDI Integration

Set Note: Hold step + press MIDI key
Preview: Play without holding step
Scale Map: White keys follow current scale
Real-time: Input during playback
